Overall Thoughts
Do you remember the 80s movie “Yor The Hunter from the Future”? (Watch the trailer here to jog your memory.)
Well trade out lasers for lightning and dinosaurs for dragons, and you got Alisia. I had no idea starting out that this Sega Genesis game would be a mix of Fantasy and Sci-fi. And while that combination works in games like Phantasy Star, and even Final Fantasy to some extent, I would say it is not a mix that works all that great here. I think the main reason is that nothing seems to foreshadow that Baldour (the prince of all things evil…apparently) is an alien..demon...demon-alien, or from another planet or anything like that, just that he is trapped in a ball Majan boo style, awaiting to be awoken.
But alas, as we progress through the game things get more technological, and when we hit stage 6 we are entering a crashed spaceship and fighting aliens or maybe they’re…
Regardless I was expecting/hoping for more of a strictly fantasy game like Golden Axe, but with pets. Speaking of, the Dragon, Thunder Bird, and Boomerang Lizard were all cool, having uses for each (though the Thunder Bird was my stand-by to use). But still don’t have a grasp on the fire pinwheel thing does. And leveling them up was pretty cool in theory, but it was never very apparent while I played how these leveled-up pets attacked differently.
While Alisia Dragoon has a lot of mechanics and thematics that I enjoy in my games, I feel like the way they are combined here, are less than the sum of their parts.
